Dublin Green Watch

While everybody knows the importance of reducing energy consumption and waste, there is a huge gap between theory and practice. Wasteful behaviour such as lights on at night in office buildings, buses idling or windows opened in heated buildings are common, much of which can be, and is, observed by citizens. Conversely, a number of green initiatives (car-boot sales, repair workshops) go unnoticed, but could have broader positive impact with more publicity.
 
The Dublin Green Watch workshop invite feedback from designers, programmers, enviromentalists, activists and engineers to investigate how the power of the crowd can be exploited to signal wasteful practices and highlight green initiatives, turning citizens into sensors to create a dynamic green map of Dublin and creating the impetus for a greener Dublin. Feedback on the app and it's goals welcome.
 
Workshop participants will work with the TCD and Intel researchers to identify how best to capture the environmental friendliness of neighbourhoods and streets. Based on this, we will create a smartphone and tablet sensing app that we will use to collect data to generate a real-time green map of Dublin, highlighting greener neighbourhoods.

The Distributed Systems Group (DSG) at Trinity College Dublin leads the Future Cities research in Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre. DSG’s expertise is in the areas of middleware, ubiquitous computing, mobile computing and software engineering applied to Smart and Sustainable Cities.
 
The Energy & Sustainability Lab is part of Intel Labs Europe (ILE) and conducts research focused on novel sensing, actuation, analytics and services, applied to the domains of energy, the environment and sustainability. The DublinWatch prototype is developed by Trinity's Distributed Systems Group, and Intel Energy and Sustainability Lab (ESL) in collaboration with Dublin City Council.
